Three Potential Drawbacks And Benefits Of Cloud Computing

Cloud computing has been proven to be an efficient way for businesses to finally replace traditional in house storage servers. Looking at so many benefits with cloud computing, we can somehow overlook the drawbacks that it may bring. With the enormous small and large benefits of cloud computing, we tend to overlook the drawbacks of it. These drawbacks are the reasons that some of the companies still feel reluctant in shifting to cloud computing.

The bright side of cloud computing

1. Beneficial for small businesses: Small businesses that have just started and have minimal need for large storage spaces can save money by purchasing them directly rather than installing a local server. This can also reduce the cost of maintaining an IT team to manage the working of a server at times when it crashes or it stops.

2. The Advantages of cloud computing over local storage server: Certain areas of  cloud computing prove to be ahead of local server hosting. These areas are:

  • Reduced software and hardware needs: Cloud computing provides software as a service because it is an internet hosted service. The client won’t need a software for operating services and there is no need for installing external hardware.
  • Varied reduction of cost: Replacing traditional storage cloud servers help you cut the cost of an IT team that you usually hire for managing the local server. Additionally, the cost of infrastructure is reduced to zero as the cloud is an internet based service.
  • Accessible from anywhere: One problem with local server was that they are accessible from only point by the same machine everytime. However, when you use cloud computing you can easily access from any location. A laptop or tablet can do the same job . The only thing you need is a secure WI-FI connection. So this makes the the option of working on-site and off-site are open to being availed.

3. A Green Choice: Without the need of software and hardware installation, the electricity consumption is decreased which favours the company and the environment. As well as this, no external hardwares are required so that means less amount of industrial pollution and poses less of a threat for the environment.

The dark side of cloud computing

1. Security remains a concerning factor: Security remains the biggest concern for business whether it’s in an in-house storage server or cloud computing. You must have heard of security breaches in cloud services, as all of them are attributable to humans. The cloud vendors have been trying to minimize the risk but until this time allocation to the third party remains a stressful risk.

2. The need for regular and reliable internet service: Cloud computing is an internet-based service and needs proper internet connection to work. Internet services are good in few regions, yet for some internet services are really poor. As soon as your internet connection stops,  you go offline and lose the access to your own data. Hence, if you’re based in a region with poor connectivity and lesser bandwidth, cloud services are not meant for you to use now.

3. With a new vendor rising, the older one’s get out of business: Competitors are always a threat to any business and cloud computing vendors are no exception. Everyday a new vendor rises up and offers the same services at a lower cost compared to the previous vendors. This difference in cost makes clients shift their service providers.
