Levels of IT Support

There are many facets of IT and there are a ton of people that go into this field. When they initially go in they have a broad perspective of what information technology is about. When they get involved in taking courses and finding what is out there they become more specific on what they actually plan to do. They become aware of the various roles that they can have inside of an organization, and many of them specialize in a single area.

Server Administrator

One of the more common it support specialist roles has to do with that of a server administrator. These are going to be the people that control the intranet and set up the network. They will be the ones that put people in the active directory. What this does is provide an internal Network where people are able to share files and look one another up in email directories. The job of the network administrator is a busy one because they are responsible for making sure that the entire network is up and running.

Switches and Routers

At times the server administrator may also be the IT support specialist for the router, but this is typically not the case. This is another layer of network support that requires knowledge of servers, switches, and routers.

Someone that is dealing with network connectivity is usually not going to have the desire or the time to learn all that they can learn about server administration. This is why an administrator of servers and a network specialist for routers will not have the same level of knowledge. Typically these network professionals are call engineers because they designed the network. They have basic server knowledge. They are responsible for troubleshooting issues with ports on switches as well as issues with cabling that may cause network outages.

End User and PC Support

Another area where it support specialist comes into play is within an end user support. There is a strong need for people in this area because there may be individual problems where users are having issues with their hard drives or other peripherals such as the mouse or their keyboard. They may have issues with the monitor or other things that complete them from doing work during the day. These are the desktop professionals that image computers inside of a network environment. They maintain the systems on the network and they also are responsible for running updates.

Application Support

Another area of it that students may find themselves interested in after they have earned their degree is application support. These are going to be professional that has knowledge of database management and design. They are going to be the ones that support various applications inside of the organization.

When there is a problem with a database or the connection to the database these are going to be the support specialists that are contacted. They are typically trained on a specific application so they become very knowledgeable about the errors that other application users may experience.
